Singapore Energizer Night Trail 2013

Singapore Energizer Night Trail 2013
I participated in Singapore Energizer Night Trail 2013 for 18km this year. Last year I only did 6km but this year, I was a bit greedy and signed up for 18km instead of 12km.  [Read about the Energizer Night Trail 2012 here]. I was not feeling well yesterday. The whole day I was resting on bed. Until around 5pm, I started to get up and prepared my hydration bladder (as I planned not to deposit any bag and test out my headlamp Petzl Tikka XP2) and stepped out from my place around 5.30pm. Had simple peanut toast and ice milo as dinner before I went for the free shuttle bus to the event venue, Lorong Asrama at Mandai Road. There are lots of free food and games going on in the event site. You can check the photos below.
I heads down to the starting point around 7pm as for 18km, the flag off will be 7.15pm. Slight delay, they released us around 7.19pm. The first 6km for me is disaster, I was hit my tummy problem again, not able to run all the way and feeling discomfort. I was telling myself, no hurry I have 6 hours here for my 18km and what will be worse than hill265, reserved energy for that. This year, they changed the route for 18km. As last year they make the participant did two loops for hill265. This year, we are lucky to have only one and the 6km participant no longer need to go through the 265 and I was telling myself, lucky me, no 265x2. But, I am wrong. After the 5km, there is a part very steep uphill with concrete single person walk way with lots of lalang and tall grasses surrounded. This is really a killer. It brings me back to my Lantau memory. The up-hill is very steep and its like never ending. Luckily what wantet told me previously kicked in and save my ass from this. 'Just go slow, do it like hiking, slow down and rest when you feel you need to'. I was still running at the beginning and after feeling my heart pumping real Hard, I decided to walk in small steeps.
I was quite slow actually, by the time I did the first loop of 6km, the 6km participants already flooded the whole runway when I started for my 2nd big loop. The runway was really pack with people. I just go slow and trying to pace myself and my tummy never feels better. I was telling myself if I cant make it for cut-off time of 11pm (for the last shuttle bus), I will just walked home since my place is only about 5km away through Ulu Sembawang park connector.
After the 2nd water point from the start, finally there is a split for 6km and 18km(2nd loop), there we started to run in a very dark down slope. I thought I was behind and alone as from the 18km start, I never overtook anyone but keep seeing people passing me and after awhile the person no longer can be seen. But until this split point, suddenly I saw so many of 18km runners where I feel better, at least I am not alone. 11km, is the hill265, I did this hill one time last year during the 6km run and this year again for my 18km. I used the rope for the steep loose sand climb at first but decided to go up without it at the final part. Thanks to the salomon shoes given by my friend wantet. Its gripe and make every of my moves not wasted. I thought I was doing great for the hill but just after I finished it, I felt like I am going to vomit. (Maybe due to I did it too fast?) I just stand still and rest for couple of minutes before I continue to walk back and slowly run back as well. After this, I am feeling much better. From marker 14km till the end I was able to run more than walk (only walk at the steep high grass up hill at 15km mark) until I finished the whole course. I was surprise by the timing as I thought I will only finished about 3 hours or more but I did it with the time recorded in my suunto watch as 2 hours 48 mins 44 secs. Yes, I did it and I think the down slope save a lots of my time as I really buzz down hill. (well, this need a lots of training and confident to yourself and shoes :p  and not the least encouragement from friend during training.)
I have to thanks to my friend wantet. Although she is not joining the event with me like last year but her encouragement keep playing in my mind though out the whole run. 'Keep moving, almost there', 'go slow and rest if you think you need', 'just a bit more up hill and you will be welcome by down hill and we run' and all this really helps me a lot to finish the whole run especially when I am not feeling well. Thank you, wantet.

Happy running and yes, I survive another run.
p/s: Please do bring extra headslamps as a spare if you can.
